IIT-JAM Biological Science (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc)
JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) is being conducted from academic session 2004 - 2005 to provide admissions to Master of Science (M.Sc) Four Semesters, M.Sc.- Ph.D. Dual Degree / Joint M.Sc.- Ph.D. Programmes at IISc for consolidating Biological Science as a career option for bright students. These postgraduate programmes at IITs and IISc offer best education in Biological Science, comparable to the better in the world.
JAM is expected to serve as a benchmark for the undergraduate level science education in the country. The Integrated Ph.D. Programme at IISc was started in the early 1990s to enable students to directly join for a Ph.D. Degree after their B.Sc. Degree. The M.Sc. (Two Years), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree, and other Post-Bachelors Degree Programmes at the IITs and the Integrated Ph.D. Programmes at IISc offer high quality education in their respective disciplines, comparable to the best in the world.
IIT - JAM Schedule
IIT - JAM is conducted each year in the months of February. The notifications announcing the IIT - JAM published in the months of October in the weekly journal of nation - wide circulation (Employment News).
The Students who qualify in JAM shall have to fulfill the following eligibility criteria for admissions in IITs, IISc Bangalore & NITs .
(i) For IISc, Bangalore: First class marks (as declared by the university) for OBC / General category students and minimum second class / minimum 50% aggregate marks for ST and SC category students in the qualifying degree.
(ii) For IITs: Minimum 55% aggregate marks (taking into account all papers, including subsidiaries and languages, all semesters combined) for OBC / General category candidates and minimum 50% aggregate marks (taking into account all papers, including languages and subsidiaries, all semesters combined) for ST, SC and PD category students in the qualifying degree.
Scheme of IIT - JAM Test
The JAM Entrance Examination will be carried out ONLINE Computer Based Test where questions will be appear randomly basics on a computer screen. The Entrance Examination duration will be 3 Hrs. and the medium for test paper will be English Language only. Total number of questions will be 60 and Maximum marks will be100. The question paper will be divided into 3 sections, A, B and C. Students have to attempted all sections.
Questions in each section will be of different types as given below:
Section – A contains a total of 30 MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) involving 20 questions of two marks each and 10 questions of one mark each. Each MCQ type question has four choices out of which only one choice is the right answer. Students can mark the answer by clicking the choice.
Section–B contains a total of 10 Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) carrying two marks each. Each MSQ type question is similar to MCQ but with a difference that there may be one or more than one choice(s) that are correct out of the four given choices. The candidate gets full credit only if he/she selects all the correct answers only and no wrong answers. Candidates can mark the answer(s) by clicking the choice(s).
Section – C contains a total of 20 Numerical Answer Type questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each. For these Numerical Answer Type type questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor. No choices will be shown for these types of questions.
Negative Marks Only in Section A: For 1 mark questions - 1/3 marks will be deducted and For 2 marks ques - 2/3 marks will be deducted. In all sections, questions not attempted will result in zero mark.
The following are the full-time M.Sc. (Two Years), Joint M.Sc. - Ph.D. / M.Sc. - Ph.D. Dual Degree Integrated Ph.D. Programmes at IISc to which admissions shall be made on the basis of JAM 2020 Score.

Programme conversion of the eligible candidates is to confirmed at the end of the third sem subjected to them qualifying the CSIR UGC NET, GATE or equivalent examination and meeting the short - listing criteria of the concerned discipline. Students continuing Integrated Ph.D. Programme are awarded M.Sc. degree after successful completion of all its prescribed requirements with recognition that it also partially fulfills the requirements of M.Sc. and Ph.D. Programme.
